Dr. Baharanyi’s passion for the field of psychiatry developed as a medical student at the Yale School of Medicine where he first witnessed the transformative power of informed and compassionate psychiatric care. He completed his general psychiatry residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital, affiliates of Harvard Medical School.  As a resident, he trained in psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic interventions.  Through work with his clients, Dr. Baharanyi learned the value of recognizing the various factors affecting mental illness, including early experiences, family dynamics, genetic influences, and social relationships. He also developed an interest in resilience, the ability to thrive in the face of adversity.  Remembering his own transition to college, he completed a yearlong college mental health rotation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he treated students with emotional and behavioral challenges and helped them develop healthier responses to their high-pressure environment.

During his clinical work as a psychiatry resident, Dr. Baharanyi often heard his clients reminisce about the joys and obstacles in their childhood. His interest piqued, Dr. Baharanyi sought to understand more about this crucial time. He moved back to the South, and joined the Emory Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship program.  At Emory he deepened his understanding of emotional problems in children and teens while using evidence-based interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy, parent management training, and psychopharmacology to help them.

Dr. Baharanyi’s treatment philosophy centers on three principles: empathy, understanding, and efficacy.  He seeks to understand the biological, psychological, and social underpinnings of emotional and behavioral challenges that his clients face. He collaborates with clients and their families to determine a treatment plan and routinely assesses what has been helpful and what has not. Through it all, Dr. Baharanyi strives to make a difference in his clients’ lives.
